‘Voyager: Photograph's From Humanity's Greatest Journey’ is a self-initiated and published photography book that showcases some of the images taken from NASA’s Voyager Program.
The Voyager Mission transformed the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune from tiny specks of light to wondrous manifestations. The impactful photographs that were sent back have changed our understanding of these distant and mysterious bodies and have rewritten the astronomy textbooks. Still, the Voyager Imaging System was nothing like taking a normal photograph. Voyager is a rudimentary 1970’s robot, and the pictures are the result of the spacecraft systems following precise instructions received from the Earth. Judged with the quality standards of today, the original images were not that spectacular. With an average resolution of 800 x 800 pixels, it was difficult to put these significant images into print. We decided to take on the challenge and revisit the old photographs and produce and print the first large-format photography book.
By combining the latest imaging software, the development of AI in image restoration and Ted Stryk’s expert background knowledge of the Voyager dataset, the team has been able to breathe new life into the images. By enriching, processing, combining and treating these photographs with the tools of the 21st century, they embraced the opportunity to really explore and revisit them in a new way.
The result in the end produced a 300 page large format book, 25 cm x 32 cm in size and weighs over 3kg and containing over 184 restored images of the outer solar system planet and moons. The book was listed by The Sunday Telegraph as one of the best ‘travel books’ of 2020.
